“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth.”

By now, most people interested in fiction will have probably seen or heard of Circe, Madeline Miller’s second Greek mythology inspired novel. I have not read her first, The Song of Achilles, but if Circe is anything to go by I’m sure it’s a wonder.

What I enjoyed most about this novel is that her writing felt like one of Circe’s spells, weaving a beautiful pattern of characters, settings and emotion. I was concerned it would be a slow read, but I appreciated Miller’s fast pace – we didn’t dwell longer than necessary on a mini-story. It was quite an escape, and probably a book I would pick up again which is saying something. I only didn’t give it five stars because I struggled ever-so-slightly to get into it at the beginning.

I would highly recommend this book, a lovely tale written in stunning prose.
