"This is how the sickness travels best: through all the same channels as do fondness and friendship and love."
The Dreamers is a dystopian novel about a sickness which travels a small college town in California and causes people to fall asleep and not wake up. This premise is right up my street so I was definitely excited to read it.
Karen Thompson Walker's writing style read like a dream, which I'm sure was on purpose considering the topic. Every time I open it up, it felt like I was slipping into a trance. It really was quite magical. Plus, the characters were really intriguing and most of them played their part in developing the story. The only thing I would say is that like many literary fictions, it wasn't stuffed with action. It didn't feel too long, but perhaps a character or two weren't necessary. I also would have liked a character on the outside to give it another perspective.
If you like literary fiction and/or dystopian then I think this is worth opening up.
